How Popular Movements Are Calling Out Imperialist Tactics at the G20 Summit

In November 2024, the world’s largest economies gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the G20 Summit. During the Peoples’ Summit and the G20 Social Summit, in light of the pressing challenges facing the Global South, popular movements were outspoken in condemning the updated strategies of imperialist domination affecting the majority of the world.

Imperialism was condemned by a People’s Tribunal, based on accusations of the genocide of the Palestinian people and Black communities, as well as the economic mechanisms and violations of sovereignty perpetrated against peoples and nations, such as the EU-Mercosur Agreement and the environmental crimes committed by transnational corporations.

Capire spoke with representatives from La Via Campesina and the World March of Women about the key issues on the women’s movement agenda. They explicitly denounced the ways in which most states and multilateral institutions have been complicit in the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

Any initiative to effectively combat hunger and poverty worldwide must prioritize halting Israel’s aggression against Palestine and neighboring countries, as well as ending the wars driven by imperialism. The activists called on the governments of Global South countries, such as Brazil and South Africa, to take the lead in efforts to end the ongoing genocide.

Historically, the G20 has served to coordinate agendas that align with the interests of Global North countries, with some level of conversation with economies from the Global South. Given the limitations and even the lack of legitimacy of this group, it was within the spaces of the G20 Summit that South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India, and China began to meet to form the BRICS.

Changes are happening within global multilateral governance structures, with a push from transnational corporations to gain legitimacy within the UN system organizations. Given the situation, the activists stressed that popular organization and the women’s movement are crucial forces in pushing back against the capitalist assault on life in all its forms.
