Material released by Friends of the Earth International features the voices of women from five countries reflecting on the energy transition.

“Feminist Just Energy Transition” is the theme of the newly released video by Friends of the Earth International, available in English, Spanish, and French.

The video features powerful insights from Charity Migwi of Oil Change International (Kenya), Evelyn Vallejos of the Nuestra América movement (Argentina), Escarleth Zambrano from UDAPT – Friends of the Earth Ecuador, Abeer Al Butmeh from PENGON – Friends of the Earth Palestine, and Tiara Davis of the Native Movement in Alaska.

With perspectives from activists across the globe, the video offers a critical look at the current energy model—one responsible for land theft, contamination of both ecosystems and communities, and increasing oppression against people and democracies.

The speakers draw connections between the current model and new forms of colonialism. This is reflected both in the lack of access to energy for large populations in the Global South and in the extraction of fossil fuels for export from these same regions. On the other hand, they note, there is a high demand for energy to sustain activities that do not contribute to sustaining life.

One of the examples highlighted in the video is Palestine. In Gaza, the energy crisis is one of the many consequences of Israeli military attacks, as denounced by Abeer Al Butmeh. The deepening of these attacks has devastated grassroots efforts, such as those aimed at ensuring access to solar energy. The struggle for a free Palestine is, therefore, also a fight for energy and popular sovereignty.

The video was released on March 8, 2025, and is the outcome of the collective work developed during the International Conference on a Feminist Just Energy Transition. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Tierra Nativa  – Friends of the Earth Argentina, Milieudefensie – Friends of the Earth Netherlands, Real World Radio, and Friends of the Earth International.
